《神代杉》

神代(じんだい)とは、地中深くに埋もれ
腐らずに炭化していく途上にある埋もれ木のことで
濃い緑と銀化した、独特の色合いが最大の特徴です。

この神代杉は山形県鳥海山麓より出土した
正真正銘の土埋木になります。

およそ2500年前の大噴火により
海側の斜面の大幅な崩落が起こり
その崩落の中で地中深くに埋まりました。

この神代杉の原木は、地表より9メートルの深さに
埋まっておりました。
地表浅く埋まった木は
微生物により分解されて土に還ります。

微生物のいない地中深くに、完璧な状況で埋もれ
腐らずに長い年月を経たのがこの神代(じんだい)
神代(かみよ)の木です。

“Jindai” wood refers to ancient buried timber that has been preserved underground for centuries without rotting, undergoing a natural carbonization process. Its most distinctive features are its deep green hues and silver-toned patina, which create a unique and timeless character.

This particular piece of Jindai Sugi (ancient Japanese cedar) was unearthed from the foothills of Mt. Chokai in Yamagata Prefecture. It is a genuine buried wood, formed approximately 2,500 years ago during a massive volcanic eruption. The eruption caused a large-scale landslide on the mountain’s sea-facing slope, deeply burying trees in the earth.

This original log was found 9 meters below the surface—an important detail. Wood buried closer to the surface is typically broken down by microbes and returns to soil. However, this cedar lay in a microbe-free environment, perfectly sealed underground for millennia. It is this rare condition that allows it to survive in such pristine form as Jindai—“divine-era” wood.
